As a young woman, Lillian Trasher (1887-1961) felt a burden for the people of Egypt. In 1910, accompanied by her sister, Jennie Benton, she began missionary work at Assiout, Egypt. Seeing a need to care for homeless children and widows, she started an orphanage. With the financial aid of the Egyptian government and offerings from individuals, the orphanage grew from eight children in its first year to more than 1,200 by 1955. Lillian Trasher received worldwide acclaim for her ministry at the Assiout Orphanage. The June 1939 issue of American Magazine printed an article called "Nile Mother: The Story of Lillian Trasher" which told about her work in Egypt. This story was later reprinted in Reader's Digest. Several books have also been written about her life. Today more than 20,000 children and widows have passed through the doors of the Lillian Trasher Orphanage. Lillian continued to oversee the management of the orphanage for 50 years until her death in 1961.
