Study in UK

Why Study in the United Kingdom?

UK universities provide internationally recognized qualifications of the highest standard. They also offer more opportunities than ever before. There are currently over 55,000 postgraduate taught courses and research opportunities to choose from on the Prospects database alone.

The quality of UK degrees is one reason why so many people come to the UK to study. Another is value for money. Unlike equivalent programs in the United States or Australia, most UK Masters programs can be completed in one year.

A major advantage of studying in the UK is the opportunity to perfect your knowledge of the English language - one of the most important skills in the international business world. If you are from outside the EU, especially if you are studying a commercial subject, you may well appreciate the opportunity to observe at first hand the operation of the European market.

Working on your student visa

(Top)
If you are a full-time student, your visa may allow you to work part-time (up to 20 hours per week). Many part-time jobs are paid close to the minimum wage, which from October 2010 is £5.93 per hour for those aged 21 years and over. This will leave you with an income of about £100 per week, but you may be paid less if income tax is being deducted (usually this money can be claimed back later, or you can arrange to pay just the correct amount of tax)

Your Dependents

(Top)
Student Dependant Visa
The explanation of dependant in the immigration rules that apply to students are:
  • A married partner (spouse)
  • A civil partner
  • Any dependent children under the age of 18
If you wish to join your spouse/civil partner and/or dependent children to the United Kingdom with you, it is best if they apply for a visa at the same time as you. Their application form should make clear that they are accompanying you and that you will be here as a student. If they do not apply at the same time as you, they should make sure that they include in their application a copy of your passport identity page, a copy of your United Kingdom student visa and if possible, a letter from the University confirming your status In all cases, they should check before arriving in the UK that their visa gives them dependant status. If a mistake is made and they arrive in the UK with visitor status, it is difficult to correct this error in the UK. Dependants should be given the same period of leave as the student.
